York Street, Westminster, W1

We are working on a residential refurbishment and extension to a Grade II Listed property within the Portman Estate Conservation Area, W1, Westminster. The proposal aims to add a winter garden, additional bedroom accommodation, and a number of internal function and aesthetic improvements. The design is focused on enhancing the character of the existing home, creating high quality spaces.

The ground floor will house a large kitchen dining space. The insertion of new large glass sliding doors to the rear wall of the kitchen will provide direct access to the courtyard which is to become a winter garden, with a retractable glass roof.

The first floor is home to the entertainment space, with the opportunity to create one large room spanning the whole floor. The floor is divided by large timber framed glazed panels that fold away within the joinery, and concealed when fully open.

The scheme has been a  balancing act between existing traditional forms of the Georgian home and the demands of modern living. Non-imposing new materials are proposed, such as waxed steel cladding to the rear, to enhance the character of the existing property,
